This year’s musical productions at Tuacahn are off to a fast start, with “Tarzan” and “Cats” bringing the crowds to the outdoor theater venue near St. George.    Tuacahn acquired the rights to be the first theater in the region to to premiere Disney’s Tarzan.    Aerial choreographers have worked carefully to suspend up to 10 people at a time above the stage on bungee lines or on automated cables.   Word is that the crowds are loving the music and the aerial effects of this production.

“Cats” is also bringing in the crowds for this populare production that has run for years on Broadway.   In review of the 2006 production of Cats at Tuachan Utah’s Deseret News said, “With a solid cast of gifted singers and gracefully agile dancers, this outdoor production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Cats’ is well worth the drive to the southwestern corner of Utah.”

The setting for cats is a junkyard where an annual reunion is held for the Jellicle cats at the Jellicle Ball.    The eldest of this special breed of cats, Old Deuteronomy, attempts to select which cats will be reborn to begin another life.  Each of the potential cats pleads his or her case to Old Deuteronomy, and then sings one of the show’s highlight songs “Memory,” which is now one of the most popular and most-recorded songs in the world.  For more information on these productions at Tuacahn Amphitheater - click here.

The Tuacahn Center for the Performing Arts is a non-profit arts organization situated in the mouth of Padre Canyon near Snow Canyon State Park.  This facility operates a 2,000 seat amphitheater where outdoor musical productions are presented.   The amphitheater sits below towering 1500 foot red sandstone cliffs.  This year Tuacahn presents three great new musical productions; Tarzan, Cats and Crazy for you!  - Click here to learn more.

The overall facility is 42,000 square feet and was completed in 1995.   Along with the outdoor amphitheater, there is a 330 seat indoor theater, a dance studio, a black-box theater, a recital hall, a costume shop and scene shop, studios, classrooms, and a gift shop.   Many of the facilities at Tuacahn are utilized for a private high school that is focused on the performing arts.

Tuacahn is known for presenting professional large-scale musical theater productions as part of the annual “Broadway in the Desert” series.   These Broadway style productions are presented in the amphitheater each summer and fall (generally June-October).   Professional and local actors, directors, and designers are utilized for the three main-stage productions.    During the holiday season the center also presents The Festival of Lights with a live nativity and many concerts are presented year-round.

History:  Tuacahn was a concept developed by Utah playwright Doug Stewart, who is well-known as the creator of the musical “Saturday’s Warrior.”   Stewart envisioned a place where the story of the founding of southern Utah could be told in dramatic form.  Partnering with local businessman and philanthropist Hyrum Smith (well known lecturer and creator of the Franklin Planner), Stewart’s dream became a reality and the arts center opened in April 1995.    The venue presented the outdoor musical drama “UTAH!” for several seasons before adopting the “Broadway in the Desert” format in 1999.   Tuacahn’s on-going offerings of spectacular entertainment has made it a popular destination for visitors from throughout the world.

Why St. George, Utah?

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Many people around the world, perhaps for the first time, are hearing the names St. George, Utah and Zion National Park.   Both St. George and Zion National Park are located close to each other in southwestern Utah.   This year, the worlds most popular travel information site, Trip Advisor, rated St. George and Zion National Park as the top in some very important categories; #1 Emerging Hot Spot and #1 National Park, respectively.

This type of recognition has been a fairly regular occurence in recent years and this is certainly causing people around the world to take notice and ask the question, “Why St. George?”, or “Why Zion National Park?”     The world offers so many vacation choices that this becomes a valid question.   We’ll identify a few answers in the numbered points below.

1- Quality of People / Welcoming Environment / Safety:   St. George is part of the state of Utah, well know for its conservative family values.   Re-nowned radio personality, Paul Harvey once visited this southern Utah region and raved about the world-class scenery, but then in specific reference to the finest quality of this region, he stated emphatically,  “Aren’t the people great!”

2- Non-humid Climate / Mild Winters:   St. George and Zion both sit in the very southwest corner of Utah where two deserts come together.   With neighboring mountains ranging over 10,000 feet, the clouds seem to pass high overhead, thus creating over 325 days of sunshine in this region.   Winter temperatures are in the 60’s and perfect for outdoor activities such as golf, and other outdoor adventure.

3- Close Proximity to many Quality Golf Courses :   Within a 20 mile radius are 12 excellent and challenging golf courses.   The quality and affordability of these courses is still somewhat undiscovered and this opens the door for the new vsiitor to find a new “favorite” golf destination.   www.redrockgolftrail.com

4- Convenient access – I-15, Las Vegas, St. George Airport:   St. George is about six hours by vehicle from Los Angeles and just 90 minutes from Las Vegas and travel from both cities (including Salt Lake City) is a straight shot on Interstate 15.  St. George also offers many daily flights, via Salt Lake City,  on a Delta connection regional airline.

5- Entertainment / Arts:   This season, in the St. George area, you can see Broadway style musical productions such as AIDA, Annie and Footloose, at a regional outdoor amphitheater called Tuacahn.  In 2010 this entertainment venue will offer Cats, Disney’s Tarzan, and Crazy For You.   Tuacahn is not alone with great entertainment, the St. George Musical Theater, Southwest Symphony, and many other entertainment options are found in the St. George, Zion National Park area.  Add to this a large variety of art galleries and you’ll find your fill of the cultural arts.    www.tuacahn.org

6- Scenic Attractions / Outdoor Adventure / Public Lands Access:  St. George is literally surrounded by protected public lands.  Forests, BLM Land, State Parks, Wildlife Reserves, Monuments and National Parks dot the surrounding landscape.   The wide-open spaces open up in every direction.  Bring your hiking boots, mountain bikes and more to explore this region.

7- Overall Vacation Package:   In addition to the number items above you’ll find excellent lodging, spas, dining, shopping and other valued services.

So there’s an overview of the compelling reasons why this is the place to visit next.   From the significant list above you can see that there’s a big reason when people ask the question “Why St. George” - we simply reply, “We have everything - From A to Zion!”   www.AtoZion.com

Tuacahn - Entertainment - Summer Season

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009
The 2,000 seat Tuacahn Outdoor Amphitheater

The 2,000 seat Tuacahn Outdoor Amphitheater

The summer season of Broadway-style musicals begins next Monday!

I recently sat in a meeting where a representative discussed what is happening at the Tuacahn Center for the Performing Arts.   This multi-million dollar facility sits at the edge of Snow Canyon State Park with 1,500 red-rock cliffs as a backdrop to its outdoor amphitheater.   Broadway style musicals and concerts are performed throughout the year at Tuacahn.   The report we heard was that, last year, Tuacahn had record setting attendance.  This was partially due to the fact that Tuacahn was one of just a few theaters nationwide that was allowed to present the production of Les Miserable.

Even with a challenging economy, the report indicated that ticket sales for this year are going strong for three excellent productions for this summer and fall; Aida, Annie and Footloose.

The 2009 Broadway-Style Productions at Tuacahn

The 2009 Broadway-Style Productions at Tuacahn

Recent concerts have done well with the highlight being the very-clean and funny comedian Brian Regan.   He was originally schedule for one show in May and that quickly sold-out.  A second night was opened in the 2,000 seat amphitheater and then a third night also sold out completely.   It’s great to see Tuacahn doing so well.    I believe that this is the 14th. year that Tuacahn has been offering entertainment in their facilities (opened in 1995).

The word is that some of the larger-name performers are now hearing about Tuacahn and they want to perform in this facility.    The Broadway-style musical productions for this year will draw the crowds and this is a year where I definitely want to see all three productions.     For more information about Tuacahn you can can visit their website at www.tuacahn.org.   For details on how to prepare for a trip to the St. George and Zion National Park, visit www.AtoZion.com and www.UtahStgeorge.com.

Ivins City - Up and Coming

Thursday, February 12th, 2009
Looking north toward Ivins Utah, Red Mountain and Pine Valley Mountain in distance

Looking north toward Ivins Utah, Red Mountain and Pine Valley Mountain in distance

For years the town of Ivins was just a quiet spot along the old highway to Las Vegas, but in recent years the community has grown to become a city, and has begun to see some expansion in infrastructure.   Here’s some of what I like about Ivins.

A- Tuacahn Center for the Performing Arts.   You wouldn’t believe what goes on here.  From June to October there are Broadway style outdoor musical productions in the 2,000 seat amphitheater.   One of the best parts of watching a production at Tuacahn is the backdrop of sandstone cliffs that rise 1,500 feet behind the stage.   Throughout the year there are regular music concerts and at Christmas Tuacahn offers a free manger scene re-enactment.   I can’t wait to see the famous and “clean” comedian - Brian Regan at Tuacahn in May of 2009.  www.tuacahn.org

B- Red Mountain Spa.   This place got a start as a weight-loss destination but has evolved over the years into a world-class resort.   It’s location at the mouth of Snow Canyon State Park means that you don’t have far to go for great hiking, biking and other outdoor adventures.  www.redmountainspa.com

C- Coyote Gulch Art Village.   I love this place for its collection of galleries and shops.   In fact they have a big art show this weekend (biggest of the year - for Presidents Day holiday).     www.coyotegulchartvillage.com   You’ll also enjoy a great little cafe called Xetava Gardens Cafe.  www.xetavagardenscafe.com

D- A new spa in Ivins is Fitness Ridge.  They claim to have a part in the “Biggest Loser” tv-show (upcoming - I believe).   Their location near the Santa Clara River basin is ideal for quick access to a lot of trails for walking, hiking and biking.  www.fitnessridge.com

These attractions along with Snow Canyon State Park and Red Mountain make Ivins a real up and coming place to visit for a vacation, a spa experience, or for some art and entertainment.   I spend a lot of time riding my bike in and around Ivins (on-road and off-road).    It’s a beautiful place and is steadily growing in its offerings.
